Product Description Lock your bike directly to your Yakima hitch rack with this Dead Lock, and then your rack to the car and enjoy peace of mind. One key to lock your bikes and your rack
Amazon.com Product Description Enjoy peace of mind while driving with your bikes with the Yakima DeadLock. Offering an easy way to lock your bikes directly to your Yakima hitch-mount bike rack--and in turn secure your hitch-mount to your car--the DeadLock strikes fear into the hearts of devious thieves. The unit includes an upper lock that secures the outside bike to the hitch-mount using a cable and steel pin, along with a hitch lock that secures the rack to your vehicle. Drivers can rest assured that the DeadLock will hold up to use and abuse thanks to the lock's injection-molded design and metal core. Plus, the lock comes with a single key for locking both your bikes and the rack. As with all Yakima products, the DeadLock carries a limited lifetime warranty.

Works well August 30, 2010 K. Reddick This locking set works well with the Yakima Double-Down hitch mounted bike rack. It is definitely needed to secure your entire rack to the hitch as well as the bikes to the rack. There is still an exposed bolt at the hinge of the rack that someone with the right sized wrench could remove - but that still leaves them with only half of a rack and they would still have to cut off the connecting lock. As with most things in life, you are really just keeping honest people honest. If someone really wants to get something, they will find a way no matter what.
My only complaint about this lock is that you cannot prevent someone from taking the bike lock out of it's nesting space when not engaged as a lock for your bike. You have to lock it to itself, which renders it's nesting capabilities useless. But it's not a terrible thing. I'd still buy it again - I just think it's slightly poor design when you have a built in nesting space to stow the lock.
good lock July 6, 2010 fatherof5 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
- installs easily (90 seconds, one phillips screwdriver)
- secures rack to hitch
- secures last bike bike to rack (and if you can't get the last bike off, you can't get any other bikes off either)
- after considerable research, there are no convenient alternatives
- much less expensive than a new bike
Pretty good lock system July 3, 2010 clp It is true that even with the locks you can just remove the pivot bolt and walk away with the bikes and rack. My easy, cheap solution: Use some JB Weld and cover the nut and threads of the bolt. Make sure to wire brush them and clean the surface. After that a wrench won't fit on the end and the bolt is "welded" to the nut without any problems with the pivot function. The lock can't get lost, stows in tube and has the same key for both lock parts. A longer cable would make this a near perfect design.
good for the end bike only April 25, 2010 Carol L. Ellis I think this product is ok.. but it is only long enough for the end bike only. You really have to have another lock if you want to put a bike on the front rack instead of on the end. Your instructions from Yakima says put your bike if you are carrying less than 4 closer to the car.. but the lock doesnt work unless your last bike is in the slot fartherest away from car closest to the end..but is a easy lock..
