Amazon.com Product Description Redesigned for improved value while maintaining great performance, the rooftop-mounted Thule 835XTR Hullaport Kayak Carrier maximizes load bar space for other carriers. It fits Thule square, Aero, Yakima round, and most factory installed cross bars. The 835XTR offers great kayak protection with adjustable foam padding, and it's easy to transfer from vehicle to vehicle with its universal mounting system. It includes ratcheting bow and stern tie downs, and two load straps with buckle protectors. Manufacturer's Warranty It's backed by Thule's limited lifetime warranty. The warranty is terminated if the purchaser transfers the product to another person. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, cosmetic rust, scratches, or accidents. About Thule To say that Thule's beginnings in the U.S. were humble would be an understatement. Founding member Ake Skeppner sold products at windsurf competitions on the New England shoreline, exhibited the product line at a number of different trade shows, and even canvassed local retailers in the greater New York area, all from his "office"--a now-famous station wagon. Initial success was found in the small but growing sport of windsurfing where a strong, reliable roof rack was an indispensable piece of equipment. This was quickly followed by success in the ski business where Thule's Swedish heritage certainly helped the product gain rapid acceptance. By the mid-1980s, the company sold products directly to ski and windsurfing shops but sold through distributors to address the large and growing bike business. A risky decision was made to terminate these distributor relationships and sell direct to retailers through a network of independent sales representatives. Much of the company's market success today can be traced to that decision. Shortly after, Ake hired an engineer and set up a small assembly plant in Elmsford, New York in order to design and manufacture bike carriers that would offer the features demanded by the U.S. consumer and compete effectively with other racks on the market. The company has since grown rapidly through product innovation, a commitment to quality, and the continuance of a strong entrepreneurial spirit as well as continuing to evolve their products to meet the needs of users.

Worked Great. September 7, 2010 Rick C. Goodin I used these racks on top of a Ford Explorer roof rack. They are meant to be universal and they fit great. I did use a ratchet style tie-down over the center of the kayaks in addition to these racks. I drove 65 mph for 70 miles without incident. I'd recommend them.
Thule Kayak Rack Is A Winner August 21, 2010 DN I researched kayak racks and settled on this one, and it didn't disappoint. The rack goes on easy, but I did need to buy longer bolts and wing nuts to fit the rack on my BMW. That was maybe a $10.00 purchase at the hardware store. The cradle is nice as it holds the boat in place while you strap it in. You must place the strap over the top of the boat, so you'll probably need to stand on your car door sill to do it. The ratchet tightens the strap securely, and I didn't use the front or rear tie-downs. On my first trip at 65 MPH on the highway, I stopped in the middle of the trip to check the kayaks and the straps were still tight. Our kayaks have 23 and 24 inch beams, and are 13.6 and 15 feet long. I take the racks off in between trips as they easy to remove and put back on.
I give it four stars because:
1) I had to buy longer bolts to fit my BMW rack. It is short-sighted that Thule won't sell a bolt that is 1 inch longer.
2) I had to add some extra padding (pipe insulation from the hardware store $1.89) cut and fit to exposed pipe areas between top pad and bottom pad. Thule should have coated these areas.
I would buy them again.
Well built quality rack August 16, 2010 Dwight What can I say, I have been generally very impressed with both Yakima and Thule products. These Thule kayak carriers are well built and perform flawlessly. They hold my 18' kayak snug and secure as well as my wife's 12' kayak. It is easy to lash tie downs to them. They have ballistic nylon covered closed cell foam pads to cushion the boats (especially nice if you have a gel coat). I would highly recommend them, but must mention one caveat that resulted in a 4 star rating.. they work best attached to Thule square bars. They say that they work fine on Yakima round bars.. but they slip and fall over enough to be annoying... always have to readjust them prior to putting the boats back up on them.
Happy paddling!
Pefect solution for carrying your 'yak September 24, 2009 M. Erb (Syracuse, NY) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I own a 2003 Honda CRV and have the Thule base rack. Previously to buying the Hullaport I had been carrying my kayak right on top of the base rack, hull down, using foam pads sitting on top of the rack bars. It worked just fine that way but it was a real bear getting my kayak on the rack by myself.. and I have a relatively light kayak at 48 pounds (Kevlar Current Designs Solstice GTHV).
I decided to buy the Hullaport and am very happy that I did. Now instead of struggling to get my kayak on my rooftop carrier, I have a much easier time lifting it up and plopping it into the J-style Hullaport. The load straps with quick release buckle are substantial and do the job of securely holding the kayak to the Hullaport. The additional bow and stern lines with ratchets are a really convenient way of giving added security when you're hauling your boat. My kayak is absolutely solid when enroute.
As for worrying about someone stealing my Hullaport racks, no worries. It is a simple matter of unscrewing a single screw to remove and stow them inside my vehicle, or as I more often do, I take the entire rack off and stow the whole shebang inside my car. I just can't be bothered with the whole locking thing and would rather just take the rack off when not in use. It takes about 1 minute and to me, is worth the small amount of time it takes.
Thule racks are of very high quality and come with a terrific warranty. You'll pay a bit more than other racks but I believe that the quality and flexibility of the racks speaks for itself.
Works great on my 4Runner September 6, 2009 Rusty (East Tennessee) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
The Thule Hullaport kayak rack system was easy to install on my 4Runner's factory roof rack, and it feels stable and secure. I like the quality and ease of use for the cost.
